October 10- Arizona Sevens got their preseason underway on Saturday, traveling to San LUis Obispo for the first leg of the West Coast Sevens.
In pool play, the Wildcats matched up with two PAC-12 rivals, opening with Stanford. Against the Cardinal, one of the two Freshmen made his impact felt as Cyprian Miller's four tries and a score from Matt Rogers helped Arizona to a 27-12 victory to move to 1-0. Later in the morning, Arizona took on USC, with another Freshman showing well in Joe Sargeant, whose two tries to go along with a Ben Scoular score gave Arizona a 19-14 victory over a much improved USC squad.
In the cup semifinal, Arizona took on Cal with the Bears taking advantage of mistakes to jump to a 17-0 lead that they would not relinquish. Despite an improved effort in the 3rd/4th place match, it was the UCLA Bruins who squeaked by with a 12-10 victory and two tries from Sargeant.
For Head Coach Sean Duffy, this tournament ticked most of the boxes in the goals for the weekend. "These tournaments are huge for us in evaluating players, and we were thrilled to see Freshmen like Cyprian Miller and Joe Sargeant have such a great debut weekend. Some teams are playing their first sides now, and that's fine, but we are building towards PAC 7s and building towards May and June and these events will help us put the best player pool forward for that."
The Wildcats have a bye this weekend in Sevens before traveling to San Francisco for the second leg of the West Coast Sevens before seeking to defend their PAC 7s title Nov 3-4 in Berkeley on PAC-12 Network.
