February 11- Arizona got their home slate of games off on the right note on Saturday, exploding for 70 points in a big conference victory over #12 Utah at Sitton Field. Fullback Kyle Rogers' hat trick and a double by Scrumhalf Matt Rogers secured the 11th-ranked Wildcats third win of the season in front of the largest home crowd in two years.
Pushing the pace early, the Wildcats got on the board thanks to the foot of Flyhalf Anton Grigoriou in the fourth minute before Wing Ryan Hudson set up Hooker Zach Biggs for a try a minute later, the third straight match with a score. A left corner score by Kyle Rogers made it 13-0 before an unconverted Utah try but it was the trio of Hudson, Sinclair Clinton, and Rogers who put an emphatic end to the half, with each touching down to make it 32-5 at halftime. "I loved our efficiency, loved our tempo in the first half, but we knew we needed more as Utah would battle back" said Head Coach Sean Duffy. Matt Rogers got the second half started with a pick and go try after some hard running work from the forwards before the 50-meter back breaker made it two tries in three minutes for the quick halfback from Granite Bay. "That's three games in a row where Matty has a double in a span of five minutes, he is a weapon for us and we've built things in to maximize that unique skill set."
While the Utes touched down twice in the second half, scores by Clinton and Lock Bronson Teles along with an intercept try by Center Luke Bartzis sealed the Cats' first win over Utah since the inception of the PAC Conference in 2010. The Cats now move on to the second of three crucial home games, hosting #4 Cal at Sitton Field at 2 PM next Saturday.
Arizona Second XV also continued their strong form, running out to a 51-17 victory on the back of a double by Lock Carter Harris. They will take on Cal Second XV next Saturday immediately following the first side match.
