Sitton and Gray make up two of the eight inductees in this year's Hall of Fame class.
March 24- Today we received news that Coach William David Sitton and Steve Gray have been selected for induction into the USA Rugby Foundation Hall of Fame.
Dave Sitton’s dedication and personal contribution to US rugby was remarkable, and beyond worthy of this high honor.
Today, those of us who play for, coach or administer University of Arizona Rugby are deeply indebted to Coach Sitton (and his family) for the opportunity provided to today’s players, and a future generation of American kids. While award plaques are stationary objects and award dinners temporal events, I know Arizona Rugby is committed to serve as living testimony to the life and purpose of Coach Sitton.
The recognition of ‘Pops’ Sitton substantially includes his work at national level, and as rugby’s broadcaster. However, most significantly Sitton left an indelible impression on the 1,600 alumni who came through the program in his time. This award reminds us again of our responsibility to uphold the rugby club’s unique ethos, of competition, character and camaraderie, as a model in modern day collegiate athletics.
Also recognized for the Hall of Fame this year is an original member of the first Wildcat rugby team in 1969, Steve Gray.
Serving as captain to both the USA 7s and 15s teams, Gray earned six caps in 15s and 18 in 7s. He was a part of the first USA Eagles Team in the modern era (1976), and captained the first USA team to attend Hong Kong 7s in 1980. Like Sitton, Gray’s involvement in rugby was total, coaching at the club, territorial and international level, including Los Angeles Rugby Club, UCLA, San Diego State University, OMBAC, California State University Sacramento and several high schools. He also coached the USA National 7s Team claiming second place at Lisbon International 7s (’93) and winning the Plate at the 1986 Hong Kong 7s.
The story was featured on KVOA news last night, with a link to the video here.
Both Gray and Sitton will be inducted in this year's ceremony, which will take place in Philadelphia and coincide with the 2016 Collegiate Rugby Championships. Both Arizona men and women will be in the competition, making this a true Wildcat Weekend June 4-5th.
Congratulations WDS and Steve Gray!
