San Diego, CA — Arizona Rugby has named the sides for their next match up, traveling to California to take on San Diego State.
The Wildcats enter the match up at 4-0 after an impressive weekend at Sitton Field, defeating Western Washington and Arizona State by a combined score of 101-21. The Wildcats will look to carry that momentum into California as they face an Aztecs side eager to defend its home field. SDSU will kickoff their fifteens season after competing in sevens to start the Fall semester.
“San Diego State is a good challenge for us, especially going on the road. We’ve been pleased with the progress we’ve made, but we know we have to be disciplined, physical, and consistent for 80 minutes against a well-coached side. Our focus is on taking another step forward as a group and putting together a performance that reflects the standards we’ve set for this program,” said Director of Rugby Sean Duffy.
Tanner DeMassa will once again lead the Wildcats, with several changes to the starting lineup as Arizona builds toward the Spring. Braedon Butte moves into the front row, while Jacob Jaffe earns a starting spot at blindside flanker. Jaffe is one of three San Diego natives in Arizona’s forward pack, giving the group a special opportunity to compete in front of friends and family in their hometown.
In the backs, Saxon Gerstl looks to build on a strong opening performance as he partners with Connor McIsaac to direct the Wildcat attack. Brody Johnson also enters the starting lineup at center, making his fall debut following a strong sophomore season.
Arizona will feature a traditional 5-3 split on the bench, providing a balance of forward and backline reinforcements. Flanker Aston Gradwick-Light and prop Jack Lister headline a group ready to make another impact after strong work in the wins last weekend.
Arizona’s 2nd XV will also look to maintain its unbeaten record, taking on the SDSU 2nd XV immediately following the first-team match. Will Barrett will lead the side at flanker, while fly half Jano Jansen van Vuuren will direct the Wildcat attack as Arizona looks to complete a strong day on the road.
