June 11- Arizona Rugby had a special interest in this weekend's match between the San Diego Legion and the New Orleans Gold on Saturday as both Kyle Rogers and Sam Peri made their professional debuts in the victory. Both players have signed with the Legion for the remainder of the season in the newly formed Major League Rugby competition.
Peri, a Lock from Campolindo, California, played a strong 60 minutes for the Legion and joins the team from San Francisco Golden Gate RFC where he has played since finishing his Arizona career. The 6'6" Forward and former High School All American had a strong career in Tucson, excelling in both Fifteens and Sevens. "So thrilled for Sam, he has a burning desire to be the best he can be and he's in a great position with San Diego" said Head Coach Duffy.
Rogers, a Fullback From Granite Bay, California, joins the team after a decorated career for the Wildcats, earning All American honors and finishing in the top four for the Rudy Scholz Award, the Heisman Trophy of College Rugby. With just a week under his belt with his new club, Rogers is making the quick transition back to Fifteens after helping the Wildcats to one of their best season, including a top four finish at the Collegiate Rugby Championship. "A special part of our program the past five years, leading us in our evolution to where we are now. Well deserved honor after a great collegiate career both on field and also off of it as one of the best captains I've ever coached."
"We are so proud of Kyle and Sam and it was very special to have them both make their debut in the same game" said Duffy "the staff in San Diego have been very welcoming to both of our boys and we are so thankful for them. Looking forward to seeing the boys continue to excel in what looks to be a great team they are building." Making the transition smoother for the two new alums is the presence of fellow Wildcats in the Legion side Ryan Matyas, Brett Thompson, and former Arizona Football player Sione Tuihalamaka.
