Tucson, Ariz. — Arizona Rugby’s next generation takes the field Saturday as the Wildcats travel to face Grand Canyon University in a Frosh-Soph preseason matchup

The match gives Arizona an opportunity to put its younger players in a competitive environment while continuing to develop the depth of the program. With a mix of freshmen and sophomores, Saturday’s squad represents the next wave of Wildcats rugby, many of whom debuted in Arizona's win over NAU last month.

Will Barrett will captain the side, with Jonny Rix serving as vice captain. The starting XV also features several players who have already seen significant minutes with Arizona this season, including captain Oliver Ryan, Jamie Clegg and Tom Wood. Rix will pair with Fly half Lance Barker to lead the Wildcat attack.

For Arizona, the focus is simple: development, competition and giving the next group of Wildcats an opportunity to play.

“Competition is what these games are about,” said Arizona Rugby Director and Head Coach Sean Duffy. “We want our younger guys to get out there, compete, make decisions under pressure and see who is up for it and what we need to do these next few months. These are valuable minutes for their development and I know Will and Jonny will set a high standard in leading the squad.”

Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. PST at GCU and will be streamed here.
