Nov 10- Arizona traveled to Tempe on Saturday as they continued their Fall season, taking on Arizona State University. The Wildcats would use the match as a chance to build depth, with several changes from the side that defeated Cal Poly last week.
Arizona would get off to a strong start, with a kick chase by Flanker Tanner DeMassa forcing a turnover that Ethan Heim would jump on in just the first minute. The Wildcats would continue that opening success with Heim putting Fullback Matteo Berenger away for a 4th-minute score and a 12-0 lead. ASU would take advantage of an Arizona turnover, breaking the line to make it 12-7 in the 15th minute. The Wildcats would quickly respond, with Scrumhalf Connor McIsaac working hard in support on the Brody Johnson linebreak to make it 19-0 a few minutes later. The 24-7 halftime lead would be the margin at the break after another Heim score, the second of three on the day for the freshman making his debut. “We had a mixed first half, and some of that is on the changes as we work to see what some guys can do and test combinations” said Director of Rugby Sean Duffy. “I was impressed by the leadership our guys showed at the halftime break, because they really took on the importance of playing with some more of that energy that we know is essential when we’re at our best.”
That energy would come in the form of a renewed emphasis on the basics, with some strong performance off the bench. An ASU penalty would give the Wildcats an attacking lineout deep in Sun Devil territory that Aiden Kemp would break through on to make it 31-7 before a linebreak from reserve back row Henry Kliavkoff would make it 36-7 in the 47th minute. Heim would continue to make his presence felt, setting up fellow wing Jake Schumacher for a try in the left corner before Flyhalf Saxon Gerstl would break the line in the 60th to make it 48-7, with two late tries from Henry Langrish and Heim sealing the 58-14 victory and moving Arizona to 5-0.
Arizona 2nd XV also continued their strong Fall season, jumping out to a 42-0 halftime lead thanks to two Nico Enegren tries. Jake Catchpole would come on as an impact sub and help seal the 64-0 victory with two tries of his own, making it a 100-17 overall margin between the two in-state institutions.
“We’re thankful to ASU for hosting and for the matches. Excited for our overall growth and the steps forward we are making. An important week is upcoming as we look to end the Fall” said Duffy. That next and final match of the Fall will be a neutral site clash with #4 Lindenwood in Glendale, Colorado, while Arizona 2nd XV will take on Colorado State 2nd XV.
