ROGERS AND COLEMAN TO LEAD CATS IN 2017
Kyle Rogers will lead the Wildcats in the upcoming regular season as they aim to contend for a national championship.
Nov 28- Arizona Rugby has announced their on-field leadership team, with Kyle Rogers named captain and Sean Coleman named vice-captain for the 2017 season.
Rogers' selection marks the latest accolade in the rise of the Junior Flyhalf/Fullback from Granite Bay, California. Rogers was selected as a 2nd Team All American in Sevens last year following a campaign in which he served as vice captain, was named Team MVP,
and finished near the top of the roster in both meters
ran and points scored. The former Granite Bay Grizzly
has continued his growth each season, named Most
Valuable Back in 2015. "I am honored to be selected as
captain for the upcoming season" said Rogers "I feel
prepared to lead this team to the level of success I know
we're capable of." Head Coach Sean Duffy pointed to the
growth in Rogers as emblematic of the team. "Kyle has
grown up somuch since I started, and has learned from
some great captains we've had in the past to emerge as
the leader of the program. He is 100% ready to be the
captain and he's already done a great job in preseason
in this role."
In the forwards, Sean Coleman has been named
as vice captain, with the Lock emerging as the leader
following in the footsteps of 2016 captain Cesar
Davila. Like Rogers, Coleman has earned national
recognition, having been selected as a USA Under-20
last year and helping the Eagles defeat Canada in
the Junior World Trophy Qualifer. Coleman was a
key figure for the team last season, leading the side
in lineout takes and steals while also factoring in
heavily with his workrate. Coleman came to the
Wildcats after a successful career at national powerhouse Xavier High School in New York City, where the Knights finished near the top of the country each season. Coleman was honored by the selection and excited to get the regular season underway. "it's an honor and a privilege to be named vice captain alongside Kyle as captain and represent the Block A. I'm looking forward to leading the Arizona pack to a successful fifteens season with a long playoff run" said Coleman. Coach Duffy stated Coleman's embrace of the team culture as vital to his selection. "There are a few guys in each team who really encapsulate what the program is all about, and Sean is one of those. He's been in our player leadership council since his freshman year and he's continued each year to have a larger impact in propeling us forward both through his play and his character" said Duffy.
The Wildcats recently concluded a preseason in which they won the West Coast Sevens and hosted the PAC Rugby Sevens Championship for the first time in program history. This year's Red-Blue Game saw a dramatic increase in attendance, with the crowd assisting the program in raising funds for the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. The Wildcats' regular season schedule will be announced shortly, with the Sevens' return to the Collegiate Rugby Championship already slated for NBC this June.
Lock Sean Coleman will lead the Forwards in 2017 as vice captain.
